David
Smith
Jul 24, 1938 — Nov 11, 2024
David Lee Smith of New Haven, Missouri left us peacefully after an illness on November 11, 2024. Fittingly, this proud Marine veteran passed on Veterans' Day surrounded by his children. He was a beloved husband, father, and grandfather, and will always be remembered for his love of family and community.
David was born on July 24, 1938, to Leo and Esther (nee Kelly) Smith and had siblings, Aaron Smith and DeLois Greenlee. On August 8, 1959, he was united in marriage with Joyce Lee LaMarque.
A lover of cars, David made a career in the automotive industry. He began as an auto body mechanic and was so talented that General Motors recruited him to attend General Motors Institute (GMI) in Michigan. Upon graduation, he began a successful career with GM starting as an instructor in their Fischer Body Division and finishing as a Field Service Engineer for Chevrolet. David loved restoring cars and was the proud owner of a 1969 Chevy Corvair that has won several auto show competitions. In retirement, he also loved blacksmithing, his horse Fergie, football, listening to his numerous Blues CDs, and exploring his family genealogy as well as the histories of other African American families whose lives impacted the community of New Haven, Missouri. And of course, being with family was the light of his day.
David is preceded in death by his parents, wife, brother, and a great-grandchild. He leaves to mourn three children, Deborah Carter (Gregory), David LaMarque Smith (Natasha), and Jason Smith (Pam); nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; and a host of extended family and friends.
A celebration of David's life will be held on Wednesday, November 20, 2024, at Parkway United Church of Christ, 2841 N. Ballas Road, St. Louis, Missouri 63131. Visitation will take place from 10:00 am – 12:00 pm, with the service beginning at 12:00. A burial will take place immediately following the service at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery.
