Doris M.
Kulage
Mar 2, 1931 — May 27, 2025
Kulage, Doris M. fortified with the Sacraments of Holy Mother Church, passed away peacefully on May 27, 2025. Doris was proud to live to 94, remaining in her home of over 40 years.
Born on March 2, 1931, in Elma, Iowa, Doris was the third of six children and the only daughter of Henry A. and Eva D. Fox. Though raised on the family farm, Doris was a city girl at heart.
On September 5, 1953, she married the beloved George B. Kulage. Together they spent their lives in St. Louis raising seven strong and independent daughters; imparting firm roots and invaluable skills that would serve their children for a lifetime.
Doris began her career at the Mayo Clinic after graduating from St. Mary's School of Nursing; later also earning her Master's degree. Along with her training, she brought a deeply intuitive and compassionate nature to her profession. She served as a devoted nurse until retiring in 1992.
For Doris, family life was paramount, and it was richly steeped in tradition - from annual float trips and visits back to the farm, to train travel, holiday gatherings, and time-honored family desserts. She had a talent for baking; cherished recipes which her children and grandchildren continue to make fondly and faithfully to this day.
Doris was an accomplished pianist, skillful bridge player, and an enthusiastic life-long learner. She had a keen interest in politics and enjoyed a lively debate. She possessed a true wealth of knowledge - often highlighted by her incredibly sharp wit and refined sense of humor. Above all, Doris was defined by her perseverance and determination, her love of family, and her enduring faith - values she firmly ingrained in each of her daughters.
In her retirement, she remained an avid card player and frequent participant in events at the Bridgeton Community Center. She enjoyed an active social life, including travels cross country with friends. She was deeply loved and will be greatly missed.
Doris is survived by her seven daughters, Karyn (the late Everett) Nance, Susan (Charles) Fitzgerald, Cheryl (the late Gerard) Frye, Lisa Kulage (Sean Ross), Janet (Joseph) Goldkamp, Joan (Matthew) McCormick, and Laura (Jeff) Raup; loving grandmother of Jeremy, Lindsey, Kristyn, Lauren, Keri, Kelly, Rebecca, Michael, Andrew, Rachel, Matthew, Laura, Henry, Anna, Curtis, Eva, Emma, Katherine, George and the late Kyle and Eric, dear sister of Curtis, dear great grandmother, aunt, great aunt and friend to many; preceded in death by her parents Henry and Eva, her husband George, and her brothers Victor, Dale, Jerome, and Lawrence.
