Halbig
Jan 1, 1942 — Jul 22, 2025
Frederick M. Halbig passed away on July 22nd 2025. Beloved husband of Joan Halbig, loving father of David (Lisa), Michael (Malu), and Tim (Jamie) Halbig. Grandfather of Ana (Dan), Matthew and Emma. Dear Brother to Nancy (Mike) Decker and brother- in- law to Linda (Lee) Halbig. brother-in-law to Jane (the late William) Boudreau, brother-in-law to Jeanne Boudreau McMenemy, dear friend to Dan Derby. Dad to Frankie, the cat. Frederick is preceded in death by his loving mother and father Charles Edward "Eddie" and Leona W. (Berberich) Halbig, his brother Leo (Lee) E. Halbig and his children Stephen M. and Robert M. Halbig. Our dear uncle, cousin, and friend to many.
Fred graduated St Henry's Preparatory Seminary in 1958 and was a graduate of Southern Illinois University at Carbondale in 1963. He was a member of the Tau Kappa Epsilon Fraternity. He married Joan Boudreau on April 24, 1965 at St Gregory Church in St Ann, MO. They were married for 60 years and raised three boys in Bridgeton, MO and Springfield IL. He served dutifully in the army reserves from 1964-1969. Fred then worked for the federal government from 1963-1995 as an auditor working for the Army Audit Agency, Health Education and Welfare, and FDIC (RTC.) After retirement from the federal government, he enjoyed buying and fixing up foreclosure properties. He also greatly enjoyed buying and selling sports cards and collectibles on eBay. Fred and Joan were fortunate enough to spend 28 winters in Tampa where they met some wonderful new friends. They also enjoyed taking walks together.
Fred enjoyed many friends and all sports involving a paddle: table tennis, racquetball, pickleball, badminton and tennis. He competed in all at the local and state level and tennis at the national level. Fred was a champion of pickleball from the second he picked up a paddle. He was one of the few people in St Louis who actually played the game in 2010, most people had never even heard of it. Fred had his special group of table tennis players who would often meet in the basement of his home and play for a few hours two or more times a week.
