Obituary

John D. Setzer of Breckenridge HIlls, Missouri, originally of Dillard, Missouri, passed peacefully on Wednesday, November 1, 2023 at the age of 83.

He was our beloved Dad, Pawpaw, brother, uncle and friend. He was also a world champion horseshoe pitcher, record-holding big bass fisherman, St. Charles County Amateur Sports Hall of Famer, and proud St. Louis Carpenter (63 years, local 417). He will be forever dearly missed.

John is survived by five children: Kathy Setzer (George Reynolds), Rhonda Schuler (Art), Tina Stephens (James), Pete Bryant and Bonita Waldner; seven grandchildren (Christy, Dani, Scott, Sean, Austin, Darren and Melissa); 15 great grandchildren (Shelby, Wyatt, Cassie, Logan, Lucas, Dawson, Ellie, Leah, Harley, Haylee, Peyton, Mia, Madi, Easton and Evie); two great-great grandchildren (Josie and Emma); and one brother, Jackie Radis Setzer. His close family includes several nieces and nephews and their children and grandchildren, including Debby Jovanovic, Michelle Kissell, Jamie Boushie, Johnny Setzer and Steve Setzer. They were considered his kids too.

He is preceded in death by his wife of 53 years, Martha (Jimmerson) Setzer; his parents Willie and Lena (Swyers) Setzer; brothers Bill, Lloyd, Delbert and Howard and their dear wives; sister Judy; and grandson Samuel.

For 25 consecutive years, John traveled with Martha across the United States and Canada by car to compete in the annual National Horseshoe Pitching Association World Tournament, one time driving as far as Alaska. At the World Tournament, John twice won his class and placed "in the money" seven other times. He twice won the Missouri State Horseshoe Tournament, and won more than 23 local tournaments. In 2020, he was inducted into the St. Charles County Amateur Sports Hall of Fame and proudly wore his prized ring until the day he died.

Among his other sporting accomplishments were two trophy fish that hung on his wall, including a 9 lb. 6 oz. bass that placed him in the Missouri Big Bass Hall of Fame in 1986.

John was a kind, forgiving and fun-loving man who always had a twinkle in his eye. He lived a personal philosophy to try and get along with everyone and never "make anyone mad." He worked hard his entire life and graciously volunteered his time to anyone in need, including delivering Meals on Wheels for decades. And he loved his grandchildren most of all.

Visitation will be Wednesday, November 8, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Collier's Funeral Home, 3400 North Lindbergh Blvd. St. Ann, MO 63074. John will be laid to rest on Thursday, November 9, at 12:00 p.m. at the Seller's family cemetery in Dillard, Missouri.

The family would like to thank the Clarendale of St. Peters where John lived his last year and made many wonderful friends, the Visiting Nurse's Association (nonprofit palliative and hospice care), US Renal St. Charles, and the doctors who oversaw his healthcare. In particular, doctors Benjamin Goldstein, Jay Seltzer, Robert Kopitsky, Brent Huffman, Michael Bolger and Graeme Mindel.
