Obituary

Joseph J Pewitt

(August 21, 1931 – April 27, 2022)

Joe Pewitt, beloved husband, father and grandfather passed away on Wednesday, April 27 th at the age of 90. He is survived by his two children, Jeff and Shelly Pewitt, Eva (Pewitt) and Jim MacKoul; four grandchildren Katie (MacKoul) and Eric Hillgren, Jamie MacKoul, Kali (Pewitt) and Michael Quinn and their two children Julian and Rory, and Victoria MacKoul; and two brothers, Wayne and family, Dale and family.

Joe and Marilyn were happily married for 65 years and had many adventures traveling the world together in their retirement years.  While greatly inspired by their trips to the Holy Land and explorations in many European countries as well as China and Russia; it was their numerous trips to Mexico and Peru as volunteers with Wheels for the World that truly meant the most.  Fitting refurbished wheelchairs to those with disabilities offered new independence to the recipient, but the greatest gift offered by Joe and the team was sharing the Gospel and love of Jesus.

Joe earned a bachelor's degree in Vocational Agriculture Education and taught for eight years at Warrenton High School. He had such a positive impact on his students, that 50 years later he was invited back to Warrenton so his former students could express their gratitude for how his teaching had impacted their lives.

From 1964-1987, while working as a guidance counselor at Pattonville High School, Joe continued his education gaining a Doctorate Degree. He then followed his passion for Marriage and Family Counseling by working for 25 years both in private practice and as a counselor on various church staffs.  Additionally, he loved acting as Senior Adult Director at multiple churches creating memorable trips and activities.

Joe was an avid reader on topics such as the Civil War, WW II, his favorite Presidents (Lincoln and Truman) and had a great passion for old cars. One of his greatest joys, however, was tumbling and playing with his granddaughters. With a wry twinkle in his eye, he was quoted as saying "grandchildren turn a dignified man into a blooming idiot". He loved puns and jokes and had the most infectious giggle. Later in life, Joe became a skilled poet, writing on topics relating to life events of family and friends.

Joe will be best remembered for being a humble servant and a true representative of the grace and love of God.  He will be fondly remembered and missed by all who knew him.
