Linus Joseph Portman, of Bridgeton, Missouri, age 80, passed away peacefully on May 25, 2022 after a three year valiant fight with cancer at Brooking Park Skilled Nursing Care in Chesterfield, Missouri. He was surrounded by his four children and wife of 55 years.
Linus was born in Evanston, Illinois on November 7, 1941. He was the oldest son of Mary Johanna Stark, originally from Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and Linus Adolph Portman, originally from Chicago, Illinois. Linus graduated from Notre Dame High School in Niles, Illinois, in 1960, and from the University of Notre Dame in 1964 with a Bachelor of Arts in Chemistry, and earned an Associates Degree in Engineering from DeVry University in 1966. Linus married Mary Lee Lefaiver on September 17, 1966 at Saint Isaac Jogues Catholic Church in Morton Grove, Illinois. Linus worked as an electrical engineer at McDonnell Douglas for 27 years and at MEMC Micro Electronics for 14 years.
Linus was an avid sailor and a member of the University of Notre Dame Sailing Team, the Boeing Sailing Club, and the Carlyle Sailing Association. He was an amateur astronomer and a lover of classical music. Passionate about trains, Linus had a large model railroad in his basement that he loved sharing with his grandchildren and friends. Linus also enjoyed learning about history, he and Mary Lee enjoyed visiting historical sites and vacationing in the Caribbean.
Linus will lovingly be remembered by his wife of 55 years Mary Lee Portman; his daughter Julie (Neel Andley) Portman, and his sons Scott Portman, Daniel Portman, and Jeffery (Denise Portman) Portman; his brother Roger (Tatyana Portman) Portman; his grandchildren Elizabeth Portman, David Portman, Kathryn Portman, and Jack Portman; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. Linus was preceded in death by his parents Mary and Linus Portman, and infant grandson, Andrew Linus Portman.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Cardinal Glennon Children's Hospital, in Linus's memory.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on
Visitation Monday, June 6, 4:00 - 8:00 PM at Collier's Funeral Home, 3400 N. Lindbergh Blvd (St. Ann). Funeral Mass Tuesday, June 7, 10:00 AM at Holy Spirit Church, 3130 Parkwood Ln. (Maryland Heights). Interment at Sacred Heart Cemetery.
The family of Linus wishes to extend our sincere thanks to Dr. Robert Margolis, Dr. Venkata R. Devineni and the nursing staff at De Paul Hospital, the staff at Brooking Park, the staff of Kindred Hospice, and Holy Spirit Catholic Church.
