Margaret A.
Nuernberger
Jan 6, 1927 — Dec 20, 2022
Margaret Alice Nuernberger (nee Hornung), 95, passed away quietly Tuesday, December 20, 2022.
Margaret was born on January 6, 1927 to Charles and Estelle (Swederski) Hornung, in St. Louis' Walnut Park Neighborhood. After graduating from Rosati Kain H.S. in 1945, she worked for the P.D. George Company. In 1949, she married George Nuernberger at Nativity Catholic Church. Together they built a house in Spanish Lake in 1953, and became members of St. Aloysius Parish, where they raised their 4 boys: Bob (Ellen), Dan, Ken (Pat) and John (Sherry Hartnett). Margaret and George were married for 64 years until his death in 2013.
In addition to George, Margaret was predeceased by siblings, Miriam, Dorothy May (Sister Susanne, SSND), Ruth and Tom, and grandsons, Jake and Cory (Cody) Nuernberger. She is survived by a sister, Evelyn Schueddig of Cedar Hill and her brother, Bill Hornung of St. Paul, MN. She is fondly remembered by her eleven grandchildren: Bobby (Michelle) Taylor, Emily (Robby) Schick , Christina (Bob) Ruffino, Andy Hartnett (Mary) and Jeff (Melissa), Keith (Marie), Alicia (Jason Ashurt), Kate (Brian Blair), Peter (Meredith Gugger), Sam (John Agusti), and Eric (Desi) Nuernberger, as well as her 20 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews and her sons' friends who considered her their mom, too.
Margaret lived a life with many accomplishments; her greatest was that EVERY one of her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren knew what it was to be loved unconditionally. Margaret and George travelled the world and she joined him as one of the original members of the Spanish Lake Genesian Players, a gregarious and entertaining community-theater group. She embraced camping and the RV-life and helped invent the infamous campground cocktail, the Yellow-Bird. A mischievous teen at heart, no one was better at Rummikub (or cheating at it) than she was. She taught her grandkids to jitterbug, perfectly press a Christmas cookie, and sing loudly and energetically, even if you didn't know the words.
Even as her health failed, she never lost her gentle kindness, and was a friend to everyone. When her memory began to fade, she'd kiss you
goodbye and say, "I may not remember who you are, but I know I love you." We ALL loved Margaret, and will miss her dearly, but are happy that she is back singing and dancing with George, Jake and Corey, and their friends.
A celebration of Margaret's life will held at the Sarah Community from 1:00 – 4:00 pm on January 7, 2023. The service will be at 1:30 in the Chapel, followed by a reception. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Sarah Community or the School Sisters of Notre Dame.
