Roy L.
Byers
Feb 24, 1936 — Jun 19, 2021
On Saturday, June 19, 2021, Roy Latta Byers (85) from Florissant, was born February 24, 1936 in St. Louis, Missouri, passed away peacefully at Garden View Care Center in Chesterfield, MO.
Roy was a devoted husband to the late Joan Byers (Sondhaus) for 60 years. A father, role model, and hero to Tim (Sandy) Byers, Debbie (Mike) Hassler, and Richard (Bill) Byers. He was a loving grandfather to Jennifer (Ryan) Winschel, Christopher (Ameera) Byers, Tony Hassler, Melissa (Zane Wilkens) Byers, and Ashley (Gabby Spitzer) Hassler, as well as a great-grandfather to Samantha and Christina Winschel.
Roy was a strong and devoted Catholic. Together he and Joan raised their children in this faith. He supported Catholic education by sending his children to Sacred Heart Catholic School, St. Louis Preparatory Seminary North High School, and St. Mary's Academy High School.
He was a man who believed in country and community, serving as a medical specialist in the U.S. Army from March 1958 to November 28, 1960 and Continued as a reserve until 1962. In the local community, Roy served as a volunteer Florissant Reserve Police Officer for 25 Years.
He was a man who believed in taking care of his family. As an only son, who lost his father at the age of three, he left school to help provide for his mother and himself. Once Roy was discharged from the Army, his mother then came to live with his and his family until she passed away in 1981. When Joan became ill and was in need of additional care in the nursing home he would visit daily, holding her hand. When hospice was needed, Joan returned home where he continued to hold her hand.
He was always the to support his children by listening, providing guidance, and simply loving them. That same affection was shown to their spouses. They were never "in-laws", but simply, more children. Roy loved his grandchildren dearly and enjoyed watching them grow as loving adults, While being in awe of his great grandchildren. They could bring a smile to his face just by entering the room.
Roy will be greatly missed by his family, but being led by faith, they know he is with Joan and the rest of the departed loved ones in heaven. Assuredly, they will be watching over all of us for the rest of our lives, until we join then in paradise.
