Sidney "Sid"
J. Steinhaeufel
Jan 4, 1939 — Apr 25, 2026
Sidney J. Steinhaeufel, known lovingly to all as Sid, passed away on April 25, 2026, at the age of 87. Born on January 4, 1939, in St. Louis, Missouri. Sid lived a full and beautiful life defined by devotion to his family, steady hands, and a generous heart.
Sid was a true St. Louis man through and through. He built a remarkable career as a phone technician at Southwestern Bell, where he dedicated 40 years of faithful service. His work ethic and reliability were legendary, and those same qualities carried over into every corner of his life. If something needed fixing, Sid was the man for the job. He didn't limit his talents to his own home. His children knew they could always count on Dad to show up with his tools and a willingness to help, no matter.
Sid and his wife, Laverne, shared 62 wonderful years of marriage, a partnership built on love, laughter, and unwavering commitment. Together they raised three children and watched their family grow into something truly special.
Sid's shop was his sanctuary, filled with every tool imaginable for his beloved woodworking projects. He had a gift for creating with his hands, and perhaps nothing captured that gift more beautifully than the tradition he started of making each grandchild a special handmade keepsake for their first Christmas. Those treasures, crafted with patience and love, will be cherished for generations.
His other great passion was trains. Sid amassed an impressive collection over the years, and one display remained set up year round in his basement, a testament to the joy they brought him. He also found deep peace in the simple pleasures of life, spending quiet moments watching the birds and deer that visited his backyard in Maryland Heights.
Sid was known for his big heart, which extended not only to his family but to the grand dogs who held a special place in his world. He had a way of making everyone, two legs or four, feel loved.
A devout Catholic, Sid's faith was the foundation of his life. He prayed the rosary every single day and attended Mass as often as he could. His spiritual life was not something he wore loudly but something he lived quietly and consistently, a steady light that guided him and comforted those around him.
Sid is survived by his beloved wife, Laverne; his son, Sid (Joy) Steinhaeufel; his daughters, Denise (Dan) Kitchel and Stacey (Steven) Schaefer; as well as his grandchildren: Olivia Currington, Emily Currington, Carter Currington , Alex Schaefer, Samantha Schaefer, Abby Schaefer, Dominic Knobel, Brittney Knobel, and Brandon Knobel and great-grandchildren, and many other family members and friends who were blessed to know him.
Visitation will be held at Collier's Funeral Home in St. Ann, Missouri, on Thursday, April 30, from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at Holy Spirit Church in Maryland Heights at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, May 1. Interment at St. Peter's Cemetery (Kirkwood).
The family would like to thank you for your love and support at this time. Sid lived a life rich in faith, family, and purpose, and his memory will remain a blessing to all who knew him
